The inguinal region (regio inguinalis) forms the transition between the abdomen and thigh on both sides, whereby it superficially represents part of the abdominal wall. The inguinal region is limited at the top by an imaginary connecting line between the two iliac crests, towards the middle or diagonally below by the straight abdominal muscle and the pubic region. In the area of the groin, in addition to the inguinal ligament (ligamentum inguinale), which connects the ilium (os ilium) to the pubic bone (os pubis), there are also various muscles such as the oblique muscle externus (outer oblique abdominal muscle) or the cremaster muscle (testicle lifter). In addition, there are the inguinal lymph nodes, various nerve pathways (for example, iliac-inguinal nerve) and the inguinal canal. Among other things, the spermatic cord runs in the inguinal canal in men and the mother ligament in women. Externally visible is the so-called groin furrow (also groin bend) at the lower end of the groin, which forms the border in the direction of the thigh. Between the two lasts there is the pubic area, the Regio pubica.

Various impairments can occur in the area of the groin, usually with groin pain as the main symptom. The inguinal hernia or the inguinal hernia is probably the best-known complaint here. This affects men more and, in addition to the pain, can cause a visible swelling in the groin area. Through the hernia, viscera can enter the inguinal canal from the abdominal cavity and become trapped, which in the worst case can lead to life-threatening complications and necessitates an operation. Sometimes the hernia is completely unremarkable - without major pain, swelling or other complaints. Pain in the groin area can also be caused by functional impairments of the musculoskeletal system, damage to the nerve tract or other diseases such as testicular inflammation in men. A medical examination is therefore generally advisable. (fp)
