Sweet potatoes: There are many good reasons for a healthy tuber
While the sweet potato has long been a staple in many parts of the world, in this country it was often only grown as an ornamental plant. In the meantime, however, the vegetable is becoming more and more popular as a real “power food”. Nutrition experts, food bloggers, hobby chefs and cooking professionals have enough reasons to speak for the healthy tuber.

Sweet potatoes are extremely nutritious
Sweet potatoes, which are also known as batatas, can no longer be found only in the vegetable counters of organic food stores, but increasingly also in well-stocked supermarkets. They are actually not potatoes at all. While the usual potatoes belong to the nightshade family, the sweet potato is a winch family. Vegetables, formerly an exclusive exotic, are becoming increasingly popular. The US consumer protection organization “Center for Science in the Public Interest” (CSPI) also confirmed that there are many good reasons for this.

The organization, which caused a worldwide sensation a few months ago with a video that shows how dangerous cola and soft drinks are, chose the sweet potato as the most nutritious vegetable.

Vitamins and minerals
In fact, sweet potatoes contain numerous vitamins and minerals. In the past, researchers were particularly interested in the substance caiapo, which is mainly contained in the shell of the batate. Studies have shown that this substance improves cholesterol and blood sugar levels in diabetes patients. In a contribution from the internet portal "20min.ch" further advantages are listed. The batate also contains many healthy secondary plant substances. The sweet potato owes its pink to yellow-orange or violet coloring antioxidants such as carotenoids and anthocyanins, which also have anti-inflammatory effects.

Power food for pregnant women
Due to its high fiber content, the batate is also a good satiety. According to the portal, they are helpful in preventing heart diseases because of the high potassium content. They are the ideal powerfood for expectant mothers. When asked what can be on the menu during pregnancy, many nutritionists answer: definitely sweet potatoes. They contain a lot of folate (natural folic acid), which is essential for the healthy development of embryo cells and embryonic tissue.

Because of the high content of vitamin C and beta-carotene, the vegetables are also an excellent contribution to strengthening the immune system. Since the human body consumes potassium during stress, you can replenish supplies with plenty of sweet potatoes and thus strengthen your nerves. There are other good reasons to get enough of the important mineral: In addition to magnesium deficiency, potassium deficiency is one of the main reasons for cramps and muscle injuries.

Tuber tastes delicious even raw
But not only health arguments speak for sweet potatoes. They simply taste delicious and can be prepared in countless variations. Even in raw form, they can be enjoyed - wonderfully sweet. You can bake them in the oven, grill them or make them into sweet potato fries. Depending on the dish, the vegetables can be refined with a little salt, coriander, ginger, coconut oil, chilli or a few lime sprinkles. Incidentally, the same applies to batatas as to the traditional tuber that the potato peel can also be eaten.

When shopping, care should be taken to ensure that sweet potatoes have no moist or soft spots. This could be an indication of germs. Small to medium-sized tubers are usually tender, thick ones are rather fibrous. Sweet potatoes should not be stored in the refrigerator, but at room temperature in an airy, dry, light-protected place. With optimal storage, they last at least two to three weeks. (ad)
